Canopus the name
Canopus is the brightest star in the constellation of Carina, visible from the southern hemisphere. Ancient Greek mythology identifies Canopus as the star marking the ships keel of the ship used by Jason and the Argonauts in their sea adventures.
Māori refer to Canopus as Atutahi and in acknowledgement of it’s brightness and apparent isolation say it was the first son of Rangi who refused to enter the Milky Way, turning it on it’s side and always rising before it. The rising of Puanga (Rigel) and Atutahi was also seen as a sign to plant Kumura.
Importantly Canopus reflects the astrophotography passion of enjoying the southern night skies of it’s founder and lead consultant.
